The awareness-raising session was conducted by Dr Usman Khan, Patent Attorney, USA for AKU faculty, researchers, students and staff to improve knowledge of Intellectual Property (IP), importance of patenting, and best practices for IP.

  1. Innovations in Health Care – A Way Forward for Pakistan – Professor John Howard, Professor, Head and Neck Oncology, Imperial College of London | August 1, 2022 | Karachi, Pakistan

The hybrid (virtual and in-person) event was open to students, researchers, faculty, entrepreneurs, engineers to improve knowledge regarding the biomedical devices landscape. Dr Howard shared his international experience in research and product development and the platform promoted interaction among the medical community, professionals, engineers, and technologists working in innovative device development.

  1. ISfTeH's Global Connections for Sustainable Telehealth | November 7, 2022 | San Jose, CA, USA

Saleem Sayani, Director, dHRC was invited by the International Society for Telemedicine and eHealth (ISfTeH) to talk about sustainability of digital health interventions, specifically the Hayat initiative.

  1. Craniotomy Trainings for Medical Students Using 3D-Printed Models of Skulls | Karachi, Pakistan

In collaboration with the Pakistan Society of Neuro-Oncology (PASNO), the Aga Khan University’s Department of Surgery and TISC organized the first mixed-fidelity workshop on brain tumor surgery at AKU in June 2021. After successful results, two further workshops were organized. The workshop primarily focused on the use of 3D printed models of skulls to build capacity of medical students, covering craniotomy training on 3D-printed skulls; microsurgical skull and brain dissection and tumor resection practice on animal models; training of microscope used in brain tumor surgeries; and brain tumor imaging and surgical planning. AKU’s 3D Printing Lab was leveraged in the printing of the 3D skulls used in the training. Led by Dr. Athar Enam, Professor and Chair, Department of Surgery and his team, the workshops are a result of a partnership among the Aga Khan University, PASNO, the Pakistan Society of Basic & Applied Neuroscience, Pakistan Academy of Neurological Surgery, the Brain and Mind Institute, and the Brain Tumor Foundation of Pakistan.

  1. Geneva Hub for Global Digital Health - Mapping of the Digital Health Ecosystem in Kenya, funded by the University of Geneva

  • Workshop 1: September 9, 2022 | Mombasa, Kenya
    The aim of this workshop was to brief private sector organizations about the goals of the gdhub Kenya project, connect with key players active in the digital health landscape in Kenya, and validate information collected from the desk review. Participants were engaged in various activities, including presentations by select organizations, a data validation exercise, and discussions regarding the challenges and success factors of digital health implementation in Kenya.
  • Workshop 2: December 8, 2022 | Nairobi, Kenya
    The second workshop of the gdhub Kenya Project, focusing on dissemination and introduction to the Implementome app, was conducted in Nairobi in December 2022, with two sessions: the first session for private sector organizations and the second session for key government stakeholders. The objectives of the workshop were to showcase the Implementome application, conduct a hands-on session to receive user feedback for further enhancements and disseminate findings of the gdhub Kenya mapping activity. The workshop activities included an how-to tutorial for Implementome, a hands-on session to test the platform's usability, group breakout sessions, feedback and questions.

  1. 1st Central Asian Regional Meeting on Telemedicine | Tashkent, Uzbekistan

dHRC was invited to participate and contribute to the 1st Central Asian Regional Meeting on Telemedicine that took place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Over the course of two days, healthcare and technology specialists from various Asian regions participated in comprehensive workshops aimed at creating a collaborative framework for developing and implementing a cross-border telemedicine network in Central Asia. The objective was to establish a partnership not only among Central Asian nations, but also with European partners.

The event was a collaborative effort between the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ), the primary development agency in Germany, the Robert Koch Institute - Germany's public health institute, and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, one of the largest university hospitals in Europe, associated with Humboldt University and Free University Berlin. The Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan and the Department of Management of Advanced Medical Technologies in Uzbekistan acted as local organizers. The WHO’s Regional Office for Europe and the Norwegian Center for eHealth Research based at the University of Tromsø were also notable participants.
