Hayat

Pakistan

In 2019, the Hayat mobile application was implemented to combat the pressing challenges of reproductive, maternal, newborn and child health (RMNCH), immunization, and child growth services, with a special focus on women of reproductive age and children under 2 years old in the catchment populations of select areas in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) and Chitral, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK).

The Hayat Mobile App

Hayat is a dynamic, Android-based mobile application developed to empower facility-based and outreach health workers with mobile technologies in efforts to increase coverage of and access to routine immunization, RMNCH and child growth and illness services. Hayat helps digitize the operational activities of health workers and aims to improve overall governance. The innovative solution includes a mobile application, for use by frontline health workers, which allows community health workers to record/log details of services provided during the field visits, track patients and raise awareness in the communities. The supervisory module for use by Lady Health Supervisors (LHVs) and District Superintendent of Vaccinators (DSVs) allow them to remotely supervise field staff by carrying out data verification and auditing activities, without having to personally make field visits.

The Hayat Web Portal

The Hayat web portal enables health care supervisors and senior government officials to access essential information in real-time and conveniently track and monitor field activities and health workers, improving transparency and accountability. Hayat aims to provide an overall improved governance structure to stakeholders.

The Hayat is unique as it enhances access to essential health services for the underserved populations, improves governance and accountability, and works towards long-term sustainability by collaborating with provincial and federal governments to integrate it into their routine budgets.

Hayat is an innovation jointly funded by the Aga Khan Foundation and the Government of Canada through the Grand Challenges Canada, through a grant awarded to the Aga Khan University. It was implemented in partnership with the provincial departments of health of GB and KPK.

Hayat is currently serving more than 9,500 females of reproductive age and above 13,350 children. Learn more about Hayat's research component, its beneficiaries and impact here.
