Pakistan, like many other developing countries, faces a variety of challenges when it comes to providing quality healthcare to its citizens. One of the challenges is the lack of access to accurate and reliable clinical information, particularly in remote or rural areas. This lack of information can lead to misdiagnosis, inappropriate treatment, and even harm to patients. AKU’s Department of Medicine and dHRC designed and developed an application for medical drug prescription, ComBact, to tackle these challenges.

The ComBact application serves as a valuable resource for physicians in the management of bacterial diseases. When a patient presents with such an infection, it is important for the physician to follow a standard protocol for effective treatment. By using ComBact, the physician can confirm the patient's syndrome based on their symptoms and explore clinical investigations or laboratory tests that may be necessary. Treatment options such as empirical medicine or further diagnostic tests, such as a blood culture test may be suggested, and antibiotic courses can be recommended based blood culture report and the strain of bacteria present. The application includes a comprehensive guide that allows the user to cross-check each syndrome with its corresponding symptoms, tests, Blood Culture Report (BCR) strains, and alternative treatment options, including supportive treatment.

During 2022, the app was developed and tested. Plans are to launch the app in 2023. The app will serve as a valuable resource for physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, assisting them with informed decision-making and providing appropriate care to patients.
