Physical inactivity, unhealthy diets along with other demographic and social factors have put populations at an increasingly high risk of debilitating chronic illnesses, also known as non-communicable diseases (NCDs). The World Health Organization reports that these illnesses account for 70% of global deaths annually. However, through preventive measures, if primary risk factors for NCDs are eliminated, WHO reports that 75% of cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes as well as 40% of cancer instances could be prevented, drastically reducing the global health burden.
With an aim to leverage technology to improve health outcomes through prevention, in 2016, AKDN eHRC partnered with the Aga Khan Health Board, USA (AKHB, USA) to develop JourneyForHealth, an application designed to promote healthy lifestyles by encouraging users to stay fit through regular exercise.
JourneyForHealth converts each performed activity into steps and visualizes the user’s progress on a map of 21 sites, which are used to travel across the globe on a virtual journey. Users begin their journey from Houston, USA, unlocking 19 Aga Khan Development Network sites that are set as milestones along the way and finishing in Hyderabad, India. JourneyForHealth converts each performed activity into steps and visualizes the user’s progress on a map. The application allows users to participate as teams or as individuals.
Development of the application was initiated in 2016 and was completed in April 2017. Functional expertise for JourneyForHealth is provided by AKHB, USA while technical expertise is provided by AKDN eHRC. AKDN eHRC is also supporting and hosting the application.
