AKDN Digital Health Programme in East Africa

The AKDN Digital Health Programme was launched in East Africa, in May 2013, under the Joining Hands Initiative (JHI), with live teleconsultation services being offered from the Aga Khan Hospital, Dar es Salaam to Primary Medical Centres (PMCs) in Dodoma and Mwanza, connecting three Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) facilities. eLearning services were also included under the JHI.

After JHI concluded in 2015, digital health services, including teleconsultation and eLearning services, were recontinued in East Africa in 2018.

Currently, eLearning services under the Programme connect several health facilities in Kenya and Tanzania as spoke sites with the Aga Khan Health Board (AKHB) in USA; AKH, Mombasa, among other hub sites. Through the Programme, teleconsultations provide improved access to health care for remote, rural populations while eLearning services enable capacity building of physicians, nurses and health care administrators to improve their clinical skills.
